Scoring: IMP

Pard opens 1, RHO tries 3 (at red on white), you bid 4, 4 as left.
Pard rebids 5. You think about a pass, but pull to 5. Pard shows a huge amount of trust and puts you in 6.

The opening lead is the K. You win.

What is your plan for 12 tricks?

I would continue with to the 9. If opponents don't return a trump, I can make via a crossruff any time diamonds are not 4-0.

If opponents return a trump, as seems reasonable, I can win in hand, ruff a spade, ruff a club (high if it's safe), and run my trumps. If LHO has three diamonds and the club guard (as seems likely), this will squeeze him in the minors. I also make if diamonds are 2-2 of course, or if LHO started with KQJ tight of clubs.

I though about ducking first , but adam's line seems better.

I duck a club first.

If opps do not return trumps, I have 2 clubs entries to hand to ruff spades.

If opps do return a trump I win in hand and ruff a spade, cross to hand with a diamond, and run trumps, hoping for a minor suit squeeze on west.

EDIT: hm, seems like adam' line is better than ducking, as it avoids the not unlikely club ruff

I was put in as a sub and played the A with about zero forethought.

At the time, I thought the duck of the A was better. You risk 6-1's and thats it. You can handle any 3-1 red suit break. There are squeeze possibilities if LHO holds both minor suit guards (as Adam notes). Seems there might even be a double squeeze if RHO holds the long diamond and 150 spade honors (you actually held the 9).

So I guess its closer than it looks. And, no, I didn't play for the squeeze. I just mindlessly drew trump and played on diamonds. RHO was 7=2=2=2, so all was OK LOL and made 7.

Ducking K wins always, unless clubs are 6-1 or diamonds 4-0.
I would duck at the table.
