You open 1 playing 2/1. This time the auction continues:

1 - Pass - Pass - 1NT

The 1NT balance shows something like 11-15 with a club stopper. What will you do now?

I pass fast. Probably matters what partners passing style is I guess, but we are going to be in a lot wondering what to play and the opps will play double dummy, and if they have a good run to 2D they may only be able to get there if I X. It just seems like we have no future in this hand and I think they will make it more often than they won't.

Pass. What are we competing for? Don't we want to defend 1N?

Straightforward pass. Partner has nothing or almost nothing, what are we fighting for?

I would double. This time the opponents are unlikely to have a long suit, and I sit over their high cards. I expect to get them down two more than once for each time that this backfires.

Pass, but if I had a fourth spade instead of a fourth heart and the same honour structure, I would double.

X here show bal 18-19 in my book. This is what i have and i have a safe lead. Partner will stand the double 95% of the times. Of course for these kind of problems we really need the vulnerability and if its MP or Imps. In Imps im not afraid of -180 when +500 is often available in mp if they are white double is very tempting because down 1 or 2 (+50 or +100) will probably be a bad result. Sometimes you can pray that they are in 1C making 1or 2 at the other tables (+70,+90) and try to set 1nt 2 tricks (+100) but defending a white 1Nt rarely pays off in MP

X or not i expect the declarer to play double dummy anyway. When it goes 1C---pass---pass----1Nt all pass and i have a balance 12 pts with AQxx of clubs and my partner has a balanced 6 pts LHO has a 18-19 balanced 99% of the times.
From Psych "I mean, Gus and I never see eye-to-eye on work stuff.
For instance, he doesn't like being used as a human shield when we're being shot at.
I happen to think it's a very noble way to meet one's maker, especially for a guy like him.
Bottom line is we never let that difference of opinion interfere with anything."

So you really expect a declarer who is playing double dummy and is getting a good split in spades and may have a source of tricks in diamonds whereas you have no source of tricks and will be endplayed all the time to go down more than he makes? I would not be surprised at all to see 2 overtricks.

Xing is fine here with 18-19 if you have some tricks like KQJTx of clubs or whatever.
