I had options with my bidding, a rebid of 2 would show a bad hand but nothing like this distribution. 2nt after 2 would show the stopper but I hoped 3 was less encouraging. 4... I cant pass

Someone should find their way to 3NT with these cards. It won'r make either, but it has better chances than 5C

Right, 2 is game forcing so I should just take it on the chin and show my stop.

I think south should definitely pass over the double, take advantage since there is nothing really worth saying. Then 3 by north, 3NT by south, probably north would pass and at least you wouldn't be doubled (I know 5 wasn't doubled but that's just lucky since it should have been.) If north pulled to 4 I would definitely play that nonforcing when there has been any interference, since south's auction would have shown doubts about 3NT. I am probably getting out of the realm of B/I though ;)

I also agree with opening the hand. If it's your style to pass I don't consider that awful but opening is definitely a majority action.
Please let me know about any questions or interest or bug reports about GIB.

I would have opened as well. Perhaps as North, after FSF either bid 3 to check for a stopper (or even half-stop) in hearts or take a chance in 3NT (expecting a heart lead) after 3. I really do not like 4 seeing that South would almost certainly have only 4 of them (for the lack of a 3 rebid).

At the end of the day, as is said by many on the forums, one hand proves nothing.

True, but it is very helpful to look at the different options I had to continue the bidding ;)

I would open this all the time. You have chances of 3NT played the other way up Kathryn. You should pass the X of 2H and now your pd can bid 3H showing half a stopper.
You were lucky you weren't doubled btw.

I'd also open this hand (as you all know :) ). But I know many who won't.

I think I'd have rebid 1NT instead of 2, but that's a close call. That might have induced a club lead, letting me make 3NT, btw. Not that that proves anything.
Kind regards,
Harald

Hi,

it is ok, and I would open it.

Switch the minors, and opening is a lot less clear.
As it is, you have a easy rebid.

For what its worth, I was sitting North on this one:

I probably wouldn't have opened the South hand, but I don't have any real strong opinion either way. I'm not a big fan of the 3 rebid. I think that either Pass or 2NT would has been much more descriptive. After the 3 rebid, I was expecting that partner most likely held 6-4 in a minors (maybe 6-5).

What I find surprising is the number of people who think that its worth trying for 3NT after partner has denied a full Heart stopper. Yes, Qx in Hearts will provide a Heart stopper. Even so, this looks like a hand that is going to play better in a minor.

I wouldn't open the South cards, but I've seen worse, it's a matter of partnership style what a minimum opening bid looks like.

The problem was over the double of 2H. Without any specialised agreements, I would pass it showing doubt about what to do: 3D sounds like six diamonds. It doesn't show a weaker hand than pass.

Getting out of B/I territory slightly, in my regular partnerships I have a meaning for redouble of the double of 4th suit here: it shows a heart stop that is happy to be dummy, such as Ax(x), Kxx, QJ10 etc... allowing partner to bid NT with Qx and have the contract right-sided. But I wouldn't try that without prior discussion.

I redouble to show a partial stopper heart stop - i can always bid NTs later if I want with Ax.

Partner can then bid 2NT with Jxx.

My second choice over the double is pass not 3 or anything else.

For me XX = 100

Pass = 50 at most

Anything else much worse at that point in the auction.
