"I'd like to bid 4 but I'm happy to defend if you have short spades", takeout.
... and I can prove it with my usual, flawless logic.

Don't understand the hate for this double? This is a completely routine card showing/takeout double, what else are you seriously going to bid with Axxxx x Kxx Kxxx etc, or basically any good 10 count with x or xx hearts.

Card showing X doesn't promise a trump holding.

I know, but what is partner suppossed to do in
the given situation?

Bidding a 4 card side suit?

As it is, for me both are penaltes, either you
have trump tricks, or you have defensive tricks
outside hearts.

Of course partner can always run, if he has a hand,
which is highly unusal.
