hi everyone,
as you know, the accommodation is on a full-board basis. but you may need some local currency for small expenditures (taxis, coke, etc).

I recommend everyone to exchane something like 100$ in the airport when you arrive. This will save you from long discussions with a taxi driver about the best exchange rate for US$ or EUROS.
Currently the *approximate* rates are:
1 EUR = 2.12 TL (Turkish Liras)
1 US$ = 1.48 TL (Turkish Liras)

Just for general info: You can expect to buy at the supermarket:
- One 3300ml can of Coke for 1.50 TL (= $1.0)
- One 3300ml can of Beer for 2.40 TL (= $1.5)

I suppose you do mean 330 ml = 0,33 litre cans, = the standard dimension.

3,3 liter is not the usual for sale.

Great info otherwise!

Nice info. I don't get to go of course, but I'm always curious about this for a country I don't know -

How will any of the players get internet access? Cafe or free wifi at hotel or? And about how much to expect to pay?

Also, to call home, is it common to buy phone card to use for cheap rates too?

All the best to BBO's young players.

For what its worth, I asked some of my friends from Istanbul regarding good places to eat. Here's what they recommended

Definitely, Tike (great kebabs and other dishes)
Borsa Kebabcisi (also excellent kebabs)
Bebek Balikcisi (depending on what you eat and drink $35-40 per person - good
fish restaurant)
Another good kebab place called Hamdi - great view of Galata Tower- we have
not been there but highly recommended

House Cafe in Nisantas (cute atmosphere, good food, great fresh mint
lemonade- not 100% turkish food - rather mixed/international),
Yufka in Nisantas/Tesvikiye for Durum - lunch only
Saray Tatlicisi in Nisantas/Tesvkiye (great desserts)

Good luck to all, and enjoy the trip!!!!!

Could you write the address we'd need to give a taxi to take us to the University Campus? I'm not sure we can take the proposed vans, so I need to know what to tell a cab driver. Also, what's the price he'll ask? Or better, what's the price I should pay.

It was ~2 hour drive, a cab will probably be expensive. I think the van we took was $100 USD. Not sure what the exact address is, they should know the college!

Maybe You may get faster response if you write to the addresses in the
http://www.worldbridge.org/tourn/Istanbul....commodation.htm

As an unofficial help, I looked at yeditepe university's website, you may print out the page and the first two maps (enlarge) and provide them to the driver.

Yeditepe University contact page

unfortunately i don't have any info about current taxi prices, I have been away from turkey for some years. it's an hour ride at least maybe more if you're stuck at rush hour traffic.

And the USA U-26 (with several forum posters) got off to a nice start with a blitz in round 1.
