Here's an interesting hand ( IMO ) from one of today's
newspaper columns:

South North
1NT 3NT

North
K J T
J 3
K 9 8 5 4
K 7 2

South
A Q 2
8 6 5
A J T 6 3
A 3

Surprisingly, West leads the Cl 4.

I play the K at trick 1.

Then the10 to the ace, and the 2 to the jack. Then the K.

I will believe the signal East sends to his partner at trick one; a low indicating a four card-suit, and a high indicating a doubleton.

If the follow in tempo, I will also believe the signals on the two first spades.

I'll then act accordingly. (Assuming that West has at most 3 hearts.)

Is the C4 a 4th best lead? If so I will not play that guy for a diamond void unless he shows up with 5+ spades.

Yes, the lead was "4th best".

are lead agreements for the opps 4th best or 3rd/5th. In any event not getting a major suit lead is highly suggestive of not having a 4 card major assuming 4th best leads consequently LHO would have to be 3334. So I cash the A at trick 2. I believe some have applied restricted choice to this situation as well.

Assuming 4th best, west led his longest suit. That means he at most holds xxx, xxx in the majors. That leaves him xxx, xxx, Qxx, xxxx.

I play west for the possible diamond length.

Justin was the first to get it.

Seeing the 2 and 3 of Cl, West led the 4 from four cards. If West were also void in Diam, that would mean he would have to hold a 5 card Major ( and would have led it instead ). So, East is the only one that could be void in Diam.
