So, at bbo sometimes players talk about hands in open tourn chat.
is it legal/ethical to draw inferences from that?
these are duplicate players playing elsewhere

Nope. Well, unless the hands they're talking about are not hands you are going to play - in which case it would be silly to draw inferences about the hands you will play. But not illegal.

Not illegal to use extraneous information? Ever read Law16C?
In regular bridge, it is illegal to play the boards without informing the director about the information you received. But online, where there is no director available, I do not know what can be done. Perhaps BBO should be informed of the problem and can then make open chat unavailable to people who are playing at a table. In the meantime I would skip, if that is an option.

I don't understand what you are trying to say. The original poster was talking about hands that he or she was going to be playing.
In real life, you speak to the director and get a substitute board at teams or an artificial adjusted score at pairs, at least if you are honest and tell the director that you have overheard some loud people. I don't see how this situation is any different.

I am completely at a loss to understand what blackshoe said and why. Perhaps my problem is that I have understood the OP question differently? Could we start over...
