So I was killing time and watching "A Beautiful Mind" about the mathematician John Nash who also suffers from schizophrenia, and at one point in the movie he is talking with some students about a fly or a bee traveling back and forth between to opposing cars/trains? until the insect gets smashed and how the total distance traveled could be calculated or something like that -- and of course that led me to a totally off-the-wall thought -- what if the insect had little energy surges. In other words, what if the speed of the insect varied in an unpredictable manner - made its speed random? How would random non-consistency of speed affect the the calculation, and even assuming the calculation could be made, would such a calculation have any relevance?

Then a stranger idea occured - if you isolate on a smaller subset, is there really any inconsistency occuring at all? For example, if we knew the exact composition of every bit of energy in the body of the bee and how the bee's body would react to that composition we could know that this bee would sputter and slow down in flight for 0.2 seconds, and then regain its previous speed, then sputter again when such and such occured, and so on for the entire flight, and then we could make calculations based on each speed event within the flight.

If we concentrate on a small enough subset, what appeared to be inconsistent is shown to be predictable and therefore consistent.

Three Questions:
1) How far into the fabric of reality would this occur?
2) Is it possible that randomness is an illusion?
3) Have another or call it a night?

I can't believe you're over 50. Shouldn't you have thought of this some 3X years ago? Along with the non-existence of God as religion paints itż

- Expressing complicated ideas in simple language is hard. Given that it also makes your ideas more understandable and therefore usually less interesting, I recommend against it.

- Acid and movies... don't do it?
and the result can be plotted on a graph.

One conclusion seems clear here: If the bug gets smashed, we have had a major collision.

Other observations:

Being a brilliant mathematician will not drive you nuts.

Being nuts will not make you a brilliant mathematician.

I guess "A Beautiful Mind" is my favorite math based movie but I also liked "Good Will Hunting" a lot. Neither should be regarded as providing much insight into the world of mathematics. I haven't read the book, but I understand it to be considerably better than the movie in terms of factual detail.

why do you prefer movies on bases?

In Fight Club there was a soap factory prominently featured so I guess my question wasn't as baseless as I would have thought.

this all sounds like the butterfly effect or theory of chaos.
Yes acid can be a sobering effect on how messed up things can be
