10 lead, east discouraged with 4
J run to Q

Now the ke point, west led 3 his smallest diamond to show interest in the suit, but east won Q giving declarer either 10 or 9, and returned a heart.

I don't think anyone's really to blame. From West's point of view, South might have a singleton 8 of diamonds, in which case a low diamond is the best way to give him a guess. From East's point of view, South's hearts might be AQx, in which case what he did was right. South did quite well.
... that would still not be conclusive proof, before someone wants to explain that to me as well as if I was a 5 year-old. - gwnn

Are we playing partner to have led a low diamond from 953 with decent hearts? I think the actual layout is more likely.

Don't give attitude at trick 1 with AKQx in dummy.

Tough. I don't see that east knows enough to stick in the 8. But he should have continued diamonds. Switching to hearts is not giving enough weight to partner's encouraging 3.
