Why doesn't NorthGIB just bid 2♠ over 2♦? Is the explanation provided for the 3♠ bid standard? (Even if it is, it doesn't match the hand North holds.) I learned it much differently 30 years ago, but a lot has changed in 30 years...

I think the standard meaning for 3♠ is 6+♠ but not strong enough to bid 2♠, which would be a 1-round force. 4♠ is crazy.
I had an auction like this a few days ago (GIB opening): 1♠-2♣-2♠-3♣-3♠-3NT-4♠. GIB just had an ordinary 6-card spade suit -- it had already shown this with its 3♠ bid. I had 7 clubs to AKQ, and a spade void. 3NT would have made easily.
