Settle an argument

This simple hand. from some team matches that I've been running, has caused an argument. Hopefully you can help resolve it ...


What's your call if you are playing fairly standard methods (5-card majors, strong notrump), and would it be different it you were playing a strong club system?

Can't really argue with bidding 2♠, but I can certainly see that other actions (Pass, 3♣) would work out better.

2♠, not close to any other action. 2♠ might not be enough if partner has a very well fitting hand with some clubs but we can't do any more at this stage.

I cannot even think of an alternative to 2♠. Did you miss by one line, and intend to put this in the Beginner and Intermediate section?

However, I will add that in the 1979 Bermuda Bowl final, Belladonna bid 3♣. I believe he was playing Neapolitan Club partnering Pittala and that this call was forcing as Pittala rebid 3♠ holding a 5=5=1=2 ten count. You can make seven tricks in spades.

Yeh, well it has been explained to me quite clearly on these fora that my bid is wrong because a world class expert made a different bid at the table; so, now we know. Georgio was just unlucky.

I think it is interesting, but little more than that, when we are all in agreement (save for my friend) that one of the best players to have played the game did something different. However the board was lost at the other table where Goldman did not open the ten count, Soloway never bid with the hand shown, and Garozzo and Lauria scored -800 in four hearts doubled.

In 1979 people sucked really badly at bidding compared to 2011.

It was board 10 of the first set and, from his perspective, the opps had failed to bid one non-vul game (actually Italy were leading by 13 imps).
