Is X penalty here? What about bidding 3, then? I really don't like it when opps stop at the 2 level...

I'd lead a diamond also, competing further its very wrong IMO.

Partner, who passed our 1NT rebid did not deny spades; it would seem a 3 diamond bid by opener after the auction should have died for us would be inadvisable over the long run. Not likely we are missing a nine-card fit since pard did not bid 2d/1nt.

It would also seem inadvisable to double (if penalty) with the given hand which doesn't have surprise spades behind "clueless" nor a different type of surprise for partner (if takeout).

Partner doesn't like it when the opps stop at the 2-level either, but didn't do anything about it. Your small diamond lead choice works for me.
