Situation:
a) 1NT (X = penalty) ? --> K10xxx xxxx xx xx
b) (1) 1NT = 15-18 (X = penalty) ? --> xx 109xxx xxxx xx.

You with the weakest hand must decide how to escape.
Your weapons:
- XX = a long suit, partner must bid 2
- 2 = + a higher ranked suit, at least 44.

Why do you choose which option?

Bonus question to b): IF you decided to bid 2 ((1) 1NT (X) 2) and opps would double this: how should the bidding proceed?

I bid my 5-card suit in both cases. If I have to redouble or something first, I do that.

Ditto. My hand's worthless at NT.

I also choose to play in my 5 card major. 2 majors always have psychological effect on opponents and doubling them are not as risk free as doubling 2 minors. Make my 5 card suit a minor and 4 card major i would show 2 suiter.

In my own experiences, even if they double 2 major, they usually defend to make sure they defeat and may err a trick or 2.

I would show a two suiter on both and pass if partner chooses the weaker suit and they double. Maybe it needs a sim though and I will not be surprised if I wrong.

When the 5-card suit is higher-ranking than the 4-card suit, I would show a two-suiter and run to the 5-card suit if they double. I think it's worthwhile to try the shorter suit as a possible home - maybe they won't be able to double us there.

5 card suit in both cases. If we offer choice of suits, even if both suits clearly identified, partner will tend to prefer the lower ranking. Our only asset will be our trumps, so I'd rather have more of them.
