MPs, W v W, solid partner, unknown opponents, RHO deals, and you hold:
♠ K 7 6
♥ A Q 8 3 2
♦ 10 2
♣ J 8 3
The bidding is:
(P) - P - (1♦) - P
(1♠) - P - (2♦) - P
(P) - ?
So, do you balance with 2♥, pass it out, or try something else? Is it close, or is it obvious?

I don't claim that this is scientific, but I've long noted that I get bad results balancing with 5-3-3-2 patterns in the opponents no fit auctions.
Even with the xx in Diamonds and the chunky heart suit, I'm going to pass.
Thankfully, the opps are in a minor which often doesn't score well at MPs...

It could be right to bid here but I wouldn't do it. And if I did, I prefer double to 2♥ as my main hope would be partner has a hand that can pass it. If I felt like I had to bid hearts on this hand, it would have been both safer and more productive to do it over 1♠ rather than now. There is not the slightest reason to think we have a heart fit on this hand. In fact, both opponents can have up to 4 hearts here (4 hearts 6 diamonds opposite 5 spades 4 hearts less than invitational) so on the worst day partner can be void!
"What's the big rebid problem? After 1♦ - 1♠, I can rebid 1NT, 2♠, or 2♦."
