What does the double by opener show?

Also, he rates to not have a heart void when he leads the 3.

Without agreements, the default for a double opposite a raise is penalty but the default for a double opposite a preempt is penalty. Then again, on this auction we have 3 or 3 available if wanting to make a positive move towards game so not any great need for a conventional double. Sorry, what was the question again?

So, that's why the maximal double is a convention...

I suppose Z is positing a hand for opener like this one:

Ax
Ax
KQJT
xxxxx

A penalty double would be nice to have for this hand, and I can't see why you would need any sort of conventional double here when partner has already described his hand with his 3 call.

(Where are all of the major suit cards? Maybe this hand only has 10 cards in each major suit.)

I guess a more realistic hand would be something like this:

AQx
AKx
KQJ
xxxx

If the opps are red and you are white, then you have a good shot at 500 opposite your possible 400 in 3NT.

Responder has made a one-shot descriptive bid, so I think the double is penalty.

Even if playing maximal doubles, I doubt they would apply after a preemptive raise.
