This hand actually occurred last night at the club. My partner was South and faced this decision; he wasn't very happy with his selection, but they don't emphasize eight-five hands in his textbook. What would you do? If you had opened 2♣, the auction probably would have gone 2♣-(3♥)-4♦-(4♥) to you.

With one of my partners, we've agreed that a 5NT opening asks for specific Kings. If partner shows the ♣K, I bid 7♣.

That gadget aside, I'd probably open 1♣ - I'm not worried about being left there. I now have a toss-up between 6♠ and 6♣; I think 6♣ is the better bid.

I think 6♣ is clear. One shouldn't worry about reaching a low-scoring strain on freaks....worry more about reaching the right level.

It's pretty easy to argue that partner should raise with the club K, but we'd need a brave partner, in real life, to do that unless he has at least one side A.

I think the more interesting question is what to do if the opps, at favourable, take the push to 6♥. My guess is that the money is on bidding 6♠, which has the added benefit of giving us an extra chance to reach a making grand.

My view has always been that partner will not raise a 6C opener with just the CK, we don't necessarily have 12.5 tricks in our hand lol and are usually gambling a little bit. I certainly don't think he will raise a 6C jump after he has shown a GF hand by making a free bid at the 4 level, our options were pretty limited and we are entitled to gamble that he has a good card or 2 after that. I would expect him to pass with the CK and the DA a large part of the time.

That said I'm not willing to just jump to 7C either. We are unlikely to get the save when it's wrong (LHO will double with the guarded CK and RHO will not save with the CK. I don't think LHO should ever save in front of his partner but that's me, I realize some people do). So it seems like a bad poker bid.

Can I bid 4NT asking for keycards, pretend I've got them all, and determine if partner has the CK? I guess that risks getting too high.

And I would open 2C; with 12 tricks in my hand, I'm not taking ANY risks of being left in 1C. I'd look like a fool!

There are lots of reasons to open 2C and it's not a bad bid but this is the worst reason ever

You'd have to undergo the perfect storm of 5-4-4 hearts, 5-4-4 diamonds, LHO having ~11 points but unable to bid, partner having 4-5 points and RHO not being able to balance in order to get passed out (assuming you play weak jump shifts)

If its matchpoints (probably the case since its "the club"), I don't want to miss 6♠, but I think its unilateral just to bid 6♠ now.

5♠ for me. This should show a gigantic black two suiter.

Bid 4NT and then 6♣ over any response. This might receive an unjustified Dbl compared to bidding a direct 6♣.

Maybe it's just one of those things, I thought long and hard before my final pass but my thinking was along the lines of what Justin mentioned, that partner could be gambling a bit based on my 4♦ bid. +1390 was a matchpoint average, only because one pair stopped short of slam (!) and another inexplicably played 7♦.
