Partner forgot she could ask about the trump Q and punted to 6. Obviously grand isn't that great, but if you wanted to get there, how? Is this one just throwing out a prayer by south?

The clubs sit 4/3 so throwing off 3 hearts is no issue in this case.

Anyways, how do you go about looking to see if the grand may be there? Is partner better off showing 5/5 directly? Or does the good suit quality make it better to just show your single?

Edit: Had the hands backwards...South opens.

Without the 3 bid it's a much better grand as you can cope with the now unlikely Jx/10x with W.

We would start 1-3 SJS but it's still not easy.

Sorry I put the hands backwards. South is opening.

That changes a lot, since I'd open the south hand 1 with the intention of rebidding 2 over 1red showing this type of hand (very non-standard anywhere I suspect, but 2 for us is 2 good suits, but not a terribly good hand NF), but getting a surprise when pd bid 1.

1-1
2N(GF unbal)-3(semi forced)
4(5+/4+/1/>1)-4
4N-5(0/3)
5(Q?)-5(no)
6(really good club suit, looking for grand despite lack of Q, so must have 5)-7(5th spade, nothing else in case you wanted to try 7N)

Isn't 7 a good contract? On 2-1 trumps you only seem to need clubs 4-3.. and there may be a ruffing squeeze if that fails.

South opening is easy:

1 4
4NT 5
5 6 (or whatever you use for "queen + nothing else")
7 (the side suit should suffice)

I do not want to be in 7 unless I felt I was behind in the match.

Knowing about the 10 card fit north should show the Q.

We show a side King when we have it and I've had a couple of times that that was what partner was looking for. Me showing the Queen when they were looking at it marks the extra trumps. Very rare but has worked well for me a couple of times.

That said South will know we are off both red Kings and won't know if North has the right shape to bail the heart loser. Opposite 4 spades in North with a 3-1 break the grand has no play.

How does N know about the 10 card fit, S has only shown 4 at that point in my auction. As our auction started, 1-1 we don't play any form of walsh so S knows N has 5 spades unless exactly 4333.

S knows that provided N has 3 or more diamonds, the grand is at least OK, and the J may make it excellent, even the 10 could make it more than decent.
