If you double, what do you do over a) 3M by partner, b) 3N by partner?

Partner didn't bid and either partner holds moderate values or was the wrong shape to bid - too many clubs. If partner holds clubs and I double, then I don't have much defence to help when partner converts it to a penalty double. Even if partner bids 3NT, I don't fancy the chances much.
Our best chance of a making contract is a major suit - but which one? 4♣ lets partner pick - but the four level is a bit rich for me.
I hate passing - but maybe this is the most sensible action?

double then pass seems pretty clear to me

Yes, if you are going to bid 4♣ pass is better.
I want to bid 4 cl too, but the thing is, it will show a big hand unless you have custom agreement.
So even if 4!C could end up in best spot, it is likely that pd may not settle with our best spot after 4 cl.

A hard problem. (3♣) Pass (Pass) ??, I rank
1. Double = T/O. You are protecting, so partner should make some allowances.
2. 3♥ = NAT. But probably loses a ♠ fit.
3. 4♣ = T/O. 2-suiter (or Michaels). For some partnerships, keen to reach the right strain, such bids don't show a mountain.
4. Pass = NAT. A bit timid because you do have a lot playing strength. Kaitlyn is likely to be right about 3♣ X.

IMO you should Pass = NAT. Your double was brave enough.
