Just been reading in detail that the USA will experience a total solar eclipse in just over 3 weeks, the first total eclipse from coast to coast in 100 years. Many cultures still regard total eclipses as bad omens, and there is a separate mythology associated with portents when these astronomical events occur. In either a jocular or serious mode, I'll be interested what some rational Americans (and others) think will happen on that day.

My take on it: Donald Trump's Twitter account finally gets hacked :)

Everyone will stop posting on the Trump thread and the trolls will apologize to winstonm then disappear forever unless their apologies are sincere.

Almost back on topic, the Perseids last night were at least as interesting to watch as an eclipse..but less dangerous :)

WaPo has an article about the eclipse

This guy is really enthusiastic. For example

Quote

Having seen 33 total eclipses in my life, I implore anyone who can to take advantage of this experience.

This strip for the total eclipse is only 60 miles wide, no?

This might get a little crowded. The last I checked, motel rooms were going for $800 a night and up. That's if you can find a vacancy.

I am hoping for a vivid description from those who are more determined than I am.

I'll let you know what it was like in St. Joseph, Mo. (Marriot in KC, $109 per night)

I saw a full solar eclipse here in Romania in 1999. It was interesting, but I found it a lot more fascinating that there were all sorts of strange phenomenons before and after the eclipse. I was at the seaside and the water became freezing cold over the night, there were weird waves, weird winds and then there were a couple of storms that also seemed unusual, not the usual summer storms. We also saw dolphins that day, in a place where there are none normally, they were brought by the unusual changes of currents. The general atmosphere during the eclipse was quite apocalyptic, made me feel like in one of those end-of-the-world movies.

I'm heading to St. Louis this weekend to play in the regional, then taking a day trip to Hermann, MO on Monday to watch the eclipse with my bridge partner.

If anyone's interested in teaming up Saturday or Sunday, let me know.
