We are relatively new to BBO - a regular 4 who wish to play together so we set up our table accordingly. Is there any way we can stop the intrusive messages to ‘club’? Mostly these are from players at tables with empty seats bu5 also from players who have forgotten they need to message ‘table’ or ‘kibitzers’ and send their messages to everyone in the club instead.

The Main Bridge Club is not a real "club", there shouldn't be an option to chat to club. I'm not sure why you're seeing anything like that.
Maybe this is lobby chat, although I thought you would only see that when you're in the lobby, not playing at a table. You can go to Account Settings and disable "Show lobby chat".

This is a huge problem in the Acol Club.
