Howell questions

Does Howell run better than ordinary clocked tourneys since the pairings are preordained & could start when the 2 pairs are available?
How many boards per round (18 boards) should you have to:
  • assure every pair plays every other pair
  • fewest duplicate pair-pair occurrences
for these number of tables:4567891011121314151617181920Or is there an equation which works?Thanks, Tom

A full howell has one stationary pair. All the rest are moving. For a full movement, you need #rounds = #moving pairs. So with four tables you need seven rounds. With 20 tables you would need 39 rounds. This is why howells with large # of tables is contra-indicated. There are ways around this, multiple sections for example. Personally, I wouldn't run a howell with more than about seven tables.
