How do you progress the bidding?

Not a hand I played, but perhaps demonstrates the need for good methods when competing given no pair got near to the optimum contract.

Form of scoring ?
We probably don't overcall so would havew a different sequence, but if we did:
(1♣)-1♥-P-2♣ then unopposed
2♥-2♠
then it's a choice between 2N/3♣ from E ending in 3N, 3♣ will of course work out better when N has ♣AQ98x

IMPS - most of the 1♣ bids would be pairs playing Acol
A touch surprised you wouldn't overcall - stronger suit required?

Much depends on your methods as Advancer.
- If you play that a change of suit is forcing then you simply bid 1S as West and bid naturally (partner probably raises to 2S and you bid game).
- Many will play a change of suit as "Constructive, non-forcing". You now have a bit too much for 1S and if you also play 2S as a fit-jump (or weak?), you really have to cue-bid the opponent's suit to create a force.

Hi,
If 4 cards overcalls are allowed, I think we can rule those out, holding KQ in the overcalled suit.
I dont play 1S as forcing, so I start with 2C. (*)
Partner will tell me he has a min, I now bid 2S, which is forcing, but could be a 5 carder.
East will now find a bid, either 2NT (the T to 4th) or 3S are option, nothing ideal, but that are his
options, repeating hearts is not.
The bid will be raised to game.
(*) It is common, that a forcing 1S bid, could be made on a 4 carder, so 1S does not solve our problems,
at one point in time, one will need the cue to generate a force.
With kind regards
Marlowe

For me 1♠ is forcing. In general I like to clarify the degree of fit quickly, and that is easier to do with changes of suit being non-fit hands with their own suit, the cue bid promising support, and weak non-fit hands passing.
In theory this should cost if we have a hand with a long own suit and not enough strength to bid. In practice this is rarely an issue - with a lot of strength missing the third hand tends to be more active.
