IMPS Favourable

You hold

A103
QJ9642
A
A63

1H: 1S

Playing ACOL (4 card majors and a 12-14 NT), what's your rebid?

Would your answer be different if
(i) playing 5 card majors; or

(ii) vulnerable at IMPs?
Thanks.

3, any other bid will mis-describe the hand more IMO... I could try a heavy 2, but I think this is a bit much.

Hi,

playing Acol - 3H.

Playing 5 card major, and a more american style, I may just bid 2H,
vulnerability and format does not play a big role.

With kind regards

Playing Acol, 2H. The hearts are not good enough for 3H, and 2C is awful. 2S is a possibility.

3H.

I'll leave 2C to experts like Phil. I don't see any reason to underbid with 2H.
Please note: I am interested in boring, bog standard, 2/1.

Well, 3 for me. Shape/strength before honor placement. ALWAYS.

2 is the sort of bid I've had a lot of success with in an acol context, but we almost never pass 2. The problem with 3 and to some extent 2 is that you'll play in when you should be in a lot. 1-1-2-2-2 showing 3 spades and extras is reasonably descriptive (OK, it's more likely to be 3514, but it's close) and stands a chance of getting you to the right place.

2 for me, opening 1 and jumping to 3 on the same suit is % 100 related with suit quality for me.

If you play FLANNERY(I DO), this is a 3 rebid. Take away the Q and you rebid 2. The upside of flannery is
not so much the 2 opening, but the ability to raise with only 3 knowing partner has 5+ or 4 good ones.

Playing a weak notrump means there's more case for 2, because partner will expect an unbalanced hand or a strong notrump, but I think this is too good

I'd bid 2. 3 is atypical in three ways: the hearts are weak, it's very suitable for playing in spades, and it's a bit light on values. I could live with two of those, but three is too many.

Thanks for the replies. I rebid an admittedly conservative 2H. The hand is improved by the spade fit so I thought about 3H but I didn't like the stiff A and weak H suit.

Either the temporising 2C (I now better understand the merits of this bid. I did fleetingly consider it at the time but was concerned that it didn't get across either of the 2 main features of my hand - (i) the 6th heart; (ii) the 3 card spade holding) or 3H should get you to the cold game we (I) missed - partner held

not everyone allows 3-card raises in Acol

I think 1 is the normal action playing 4-card majors. Both actions may lead to a 4-3 fit, but 2 risks losing a 4-4 fit when opener is in the 15-16 range.
