Hi all,

this hand I offered the participants of my Indy with prepared hand for Billies.

No declarer found the rite line.

Many defenders took the first diamond, when declarer played (as all did)
EDIT by XX1943: K or Q of ♦ in the first round of that suit.
their A of diamonds.

As declarer, I'd be happy if I had the Ace of diamonds in that hand -
as defender, I'd be happy to be able to win the trick if declarer had played the ace.

There was no squeeze. Defender can discard the HK on trick 11, as his partner has shown the 9.

This was a losing line, countered by opponent's misplay.

A small diamond from South at Trick #2 is the standard text play for this kind of hands (dummy has only one side entry). As defender (West), to duck first ♦ is also a text play, even with Ax.

Actually, I just found a second misplay by the defenders...

The correct play is not to overtake. You can count the points and see your partner doesn't have the A♥ or K♣, so you can count up 9 tricks by the opponents. So taking two spades and two diamonds clearly won't cut it.

The correct play for the defender is to discourage on trick 3. A heart switch defeats the contract.

And therefore, the correct play is to go up with the A♠ on trick 3 and continue diamonds. You get two spades, a heart, four diamonds, and two clubs for 9 tricks. They get two diamonds and two spades. If spades are 5-2 (the location of the 5 of spades is unknown) then going up with the ace may allow you to squeeze out a tenth trick.

Those things are easy on a teaching game, but sometime you miss it when you are on diffence and you must make a play fast without esitation. The only way is to be prepared at trick on, on a real game, ask to leave the first round card on the table and take ur time to think about the diamond suit.

yep 2 of the WEST players did hold up the A of ♦.

no i meant did any declarer play that way... say lead the 9 from hand and let it go, then lead the other diamond to the K.. but a heart switch looks bad in that case

Thats the right play Jimmy, but yes a H switch does look sick.

No declarer played it that way. That was the reason, why I posted this hand here.
Though the tourney was restricted to beginneres and intermedistes, I was astonished, that nobody played it along the rite line.
