2S was negative free bid.
What now ?

(double is t/o, 2NT is natural)

Pass.

I have no reason to act at this time.

I'd try 3D. X is good if partner is 5-4 in the minors, but if he's 5-3 I'd expect him to bid 3C (I'd expect a 2N bid by him to be natural). 3D is also more preemptive on LHO (If I double LHO can XX then raise, can cue, can pass then balance with 3H or bid a direct 3H etc), which is very good...if partner is 5/4 in the minors they have a fit anyways and are probably competing. I think this is a good problem, X/2N/3D are all pretty reasonable options.

Bidding 3 is nice, but I would fear that my partner may overcompete nonvulnerable.
I double and hope for the best.
Kind Regards

X, I have 4 clubs, a decent hand for my pass and no diamond raise, this is what it shows by my methods.

3.
J962 is not a suit I wish to hint by doubling. I'm about T short of 2NT. Pass could be a winner if they are about to play in a misfit, but usually it won't be.

I´d double, partner shouldn´t expect good 5 clubs and doubleton diamond, with that hand I would bid 3 as a passed hand since with 6 I would open 3 at this vulnerability. Too complicated reasoning I know, but its a clsoe decision after all.

I have control of the spades I have hearts stopped a dia honor
and clubs stopped. I am close to the top of my passed hand
the club Q would make me happier than the J but still this hand
seems the very definition of

2N

Passing here can be a complete disaster since we could easily
have nothing and pass. If we trust p has a reasonable 2d overcall
we may easily have play for 3n here by all means invite. 2n also
leaves room for 3c by p which would most likely be a better spot
than 3d.

Raising to 3d has some promise but it increases the difficulty of
reaching 3n and takes clubs almost hopelessly out of the picture.

x for TO here also makes the search for 3n problematic what
would/could you do if p bid 3c??

I doubled. My pd wasn't happy about it.

It might not be entirely reasonable at this colours but the question is how low can we go.

I didn't like 2N because of weak heart holding and I didn't want to lose clubs or possible (although unlikely) 3N by bidding 3D.
I kinda more like 3D now after reading the answers. It's preemptive and games are rare.

Thanks all for the answers.

I'm not a big fan of such reasonings.
What if I have 6+4?
What if my hand is otherwise unsuitable for a 3-opening, like with an outside A and an outside K? Or seven small with two aces?
The argument just doesn't hold imo. One could still define 3 now as promising something in diamonds but it will mean that there exists a bunch of hands with just clubs that can't bid the second time around either.

3 for me. I would not Pass in practice because it would take me too long to decide to do so, and that will constrain partner. I like JLOGIC's arguments, and taking away the 3 cue from the opener is also useful.
I prefer to give the lawmakers credit for stating things for a reason - barmar
