What do you think? I bid 2♠ showing control and my partner closed the bidding with 3NT (not a bad contract at the end)

Was it a reverse? Was 2♥ a better move? Pass? My partner guarantees only 6 points

Double. A negative double.

You don't want them to play 2♦ and you want partner to be part of the decision. You can play in any strain.

Also, some people play the double here to show 3-heart support. That's a convention called support-double.

Finally, 2♠ would be a reverse. It would be even better to pass for our hand is minimum in HCP's. But I recommend double for those few HCP's are very well placed and we want to compete.

Double, showing 3crd ♥ support. Not playing support doubles, I would bid 2♥ with this hand.
A balanced 12-14 hand can pass the rest of the time. A 2♠ bid should definitely show an unbalanced hand.

When you hold 12-14(15) balanced your default second bid is PASS. Only excepton of this is having 4 card support for partner's suit where you want to act again.

Only when you are forced to act (partner responses, and RHO passes) you normally rebid 1NT.
If you play a convention called support double, you double to show 3 card support instead of passing.


2♠ is a reverse, definition of reverse: a voluntary call that forces partner to bid at the 3 level if your only fit is in the first suit shown (clubs).

Sometimes when forced, the best you can do is raise with three card support. But IMO to bid 2♥ freely here would absolutely promise four cards. I would pass: I am not forced and have nothing else important to say.

Not playing support doubles, I would bid 2♥. A three-card raise is not the worst thing in the world, and you have a very nice three-card raise.

Playing support doubles, this is a clear support double.
