Let me start by agreeing iwth the majority vote (at least so far) tha this is a clear cut takeout double over 3♦, My partner had other ideas, thinking that a double would be penalty... so he went twith 3♠'s. (I sent him a copy of Robson/Segal after this session). On wiith the hand after he picked the 2♠ response. The auction continued... .

Assuming that either 3♠ was your choiice over 3♦, or you are called as a replacement at this point in the auction. Are you done with the auction or do you find another bid?

Let me try and make a case for 3s vs double---
the spade suit is very very nice and perfectly playable
especially opposite a singleton (especially the Q which
p wont appreciate if we x). IMO we should reserve x for
hands with much less clear direction AJxxxx AQx x Axx
or some such similar hands. 4s is by far our sides most
likely game and it seems a shame we would supress
this fact by using x here.
over 4d I would pass p heard our 3s bid and did not wish
to continue (quite possibly having dead dia values even if
they have a spade fit).

I voted 3S on the first poll, and didn't know what to put on the second: IF you play X as takeout I think it's close between X and 3S -- but without discussion the (old) standard rule is "after anybody bids notrump doubles are penalty", and even with discussion 90+% of the players in my area play it that way, even if "everything is takeout" is popular among modern experts.
When 4D comes back I would pass at IMPs but feel I have to double at MPs. I've got 3 tricks myself, partner did bid but didn't raise, he has spade shortness and a couple face cards SOMEwhere. I was expecting 140 or 170, and 4DX-2 is the most obvious way for me to get more than 100.

Should the double be 100% clear? Is it because it is MP's? If we double and partner bids hearts (or clubs) what are we to do?
I chose 3♠ but I'd pass over 4♦ (isn't partner's double for penalty over 4♦?)

Also, he rates to not have a heart void when he leads the ♥3.

Be happy that we found the best strain if he bids clubs, bid 3♠ to show the nuts over 3♥ hearts. Be also very happy to pass 4♥, knowing we found the strain were ♠Q can be disposed without finese.

Yes, but partner doesn't know we have 3 times the defensive values 3♠ promised

There will be a followup question on some auctions after the voting is in.
