I open 1 and I plan to pass 1nt. Over the auction that continued with opponents 2 and partners 2nt I'll try 3. So depending on the auction I'm either more passive than most (passing 1nt) or more agressive (trying 3 instead of 3).

1D opening: I prefer: 1D > 1S
2NT: I prefer: 2NT > 3C > 3NT
3S: I prefer: 3S > 3NT >> 3D > Pass
4S: I prefer: 4D > 3NT >> 5D >>>> 4S
=> IMO the bidding was fine until the 4S bid.

I guess North thought 3 shows a 7-6 hand?

Why aren't we bidding 3? Having limited our values via 1-1N-[2di], 3 now has to be extra shape, not extra values. Seems to resemble the hand I'm holding.

It depends.

After 1 - 1N - 2 - 2 - 3 is just looking for a better place to land, however, expect partner to make the wrong decision with 2-2 in the pointed suits.

But if the auction starts:1 - 1N - 2 - 2, 3 is definitely extras.

Either way, even if you land on your feet, you'll have a hard time convincing anyone you are showing longer diamonds.
Hi y'all!

No, after calming down when he thought I was showing a "huge hand" he said he should bid diamonds.

Seriously nige, 0 for 2/3?
Imaginative bid with so many HCP. It might work. I didn't consider it, so give it only 7.

IMO,
  • Over 2N, South: 3 = 10, 3 = 7
  • Over 3, North: 4 = 10, 3N = 9, 5 = 8, 6 = 7.

Nige, your rating system is starting to annoy me, it would be much more useful to hear the reason WHY you rated the bids that way.

I apologize. No intention to annoy but I'm puzzled. Do you prefer when a poster baldly states his choice, dismissing alternatives as rubbish? I, sometimes, explain my marks -- unless I think they're obvious -- or somebody else has already justified the alternative choices. Anyway, I'm happy to explain here.
  • Over partner's 2N, a 3 rebid is non-forcing and limits your hand. As Mr Ace and Phil point out, opponents have a heart fit and if they bid 3, you might elect to bid 3, which should show 56 shape, without promising a mountain.
  • Most partnerships treat an immediate 3 as a reverse, showing a better hand than you hold but you bravely chose that bid, at the table. Over that, partner might try for a slam with a 4 cue-bid. He might worry that a 4 cue-bid sets as trumps, so he might settle for game in 3N or 5. With a maximum pass, 4 card support, and a couple of aces, he might hazard 6 (expecting you to have more for your 3 bid).

Thanks that's a lot better & please excuse me, I'm tired and grumpy after a long weekend of bridge.

Why not? If I can buy the contract in 1nt all white when it seems very likely that the opponents have 8 or 9 tricks in a contract (they have at least a 9 card fit), that seems like a great thing. I expect we have 19-22 hcp and no guarantee of a fit. I think it reasonably likely that I can setup and enjoy the diamonds, and think I'll make 1nt decently often, with overtricks some of the time, and rarely be down many tricks. It is true I might miss a 5-3 spade fit or a 6-3 diamond fit, but I don't think the other auctions are likely to be that great for me once it has gone 1-1nt. I much prefer when it goes the reasonably likely 1-1-1 or the less likely 1-1 or opponents bidding, but I tried my best by opening 1 and now I take my medicine (of missed possible spade fit) on this auction.
