BBO forum,
We play DONT but my partner had a hand recently that was
2,5,3,3. This distribution doesn't work with DONT but it
turns out we can make 3 hearts.
Now my partner wants to switch to Modified Cappalletti. I
have played Cappalletti in the past but I don't see the
advantage of Modified. Two clubs can show long diamonds,
diamonds and hearts, diamonds and spades, clubs and
hearts or clubs and spades. To find a fit we may have to
go to the 3 level. What am I missing?

With 2533 you either bid the hand as a onesuiter with hearts or you don't. Probably better to pass but whichever method you play you can bid if you want. DONT is actually best because partner may pass your double or bid 2d with long diamonds.
I suppose there are 100 different conventions called "modified cappaletti" . What you describe sounds completely nuts . While it may be tempting to put many hand types into the 2c bid the problem is that often lho bids something and then it would be nice if your 2c bid actually showed something that might help partner to decide what to bid or to lead.

The world would be such a happy place, if only everyone played Acol :) --- TramTicket
