MPs, you're vul, they're not

1N is 12-14 and 2C is bog-standard Stayman. 2H shows 45 in the majors with less than INV values.

Your call - X, pass, 3H, something else?

Edited to add hand diagram.

J10xx AQ9xx xx Kx

Partner deals, your side bids 1N 2C 2D 2H, where 1N is 12-14 and 2C is bog-standard Stayman. 2H shows 45 in the majors with less than INV values.

Partner passes this and RHO butts in with 3C. Your call - X, pass, 3H, something else?

Will add a hand diagram tomorrow when not posting from phone.

Seems like a textbook double.

I rank
  • Double = Competitive. Descriptive. Maximum for previous actions.
  • Pass = Pusillanimous.
  • 3 = Committal. Misdescriptive.

And if you double, what do you lead? I'll double at matchpoints because I don't expect any matchpoints for -110 anyhow. So -470 is no different.

It's not a lock partner passes. Anyway, I lead a diamond if he does.

Bidding "three over three" , bidding at the three level when the opponents are already at the three level, with an eight card fit, is anti-law. I'm not sure how partner would know three hearts is right. In any case, the one thing I won't do is defend an undoubled contract when we have a majority of the points. Of course I've been -470 before but I won't get many matchpoints for -110 anyhow.

So mister orange county, you going to the long beach regional?

Textbook X is Kxx/x in the minors so partner with AKx, xx, AJ10xx, Jxx can bid 3 in comfort

That said I think I double

Thanks all. Basically just wanted to check I wasn't being too greedy by doubling here, which is what I picked. Partner had KQx xx KQ10xx Q10x and bid 3D which drifted one off (due to RHO having AJ9x in trumps) for a joint bottom.

If he somehow guesses to pass the double, we can as it happens collect 300 because the 3C bidder had a rather poor suit: xx KJ AJ9x A9xxx

Strange 3D call I think. You've advertised both majors and we have a preponderance of points.

I like your auction. Partner's 3D bid showed a lack of understanding for MPs scoring!

Why isn't my hand AJxx, xxxxx, AJx, x where 4 and 3 are both possibly making, it's a routine 3.

I've haven't said I have diamond length.

When we have found a fit and passed it out, our doubles are cooperative/penalty, not "I have a good hand" and shortness in their suit.

Even then opposite the hand you gave we seem to be a favorite to beat 3C anyway.

Yes but beating it 1 won't get you many MPs, and if the bidder has the J with higher honour(s) and spades are 4-2 which is pretty likely, you're not beating it at all.

We have not found a fit, it is quite likely we don't have more than a 7 card fit, and if we do it could easily be in diamonds.

If you're going to double on this hand, you can easily leave partner no good option. I said I would do it anyway, but you have to be aware of the risks. I wouldn't have this problem (I'd have a different one) as we occasionally garbage stayman out of a weak NT with a 4-4, so partner would have bid 2 over 2 with a 3253 and I would know he only had 2 hearts. My X if I chose to do it would now be pure pens.

Clear double. I have some sympathy for partner's pull. I don't think I would have pulled, though.
