MPs, vul vs not:

Pass now?

Sorry if this seems too simple, I got a lot of hands terribly wrong lately, felt like doing a bit of forums brainstorming to get my logic together.

Easy pass. Opener showed 18-19 hcp so pd has at most 20 hcp and he did not even double 1 NT so probably he has a spade oriented hand that does not want to defend 1 NT.

3 probably shows some values. Besides, partner might take preference to hearts.

Pass.

pass, where do you want to go?
The only question is, why North did not pass,
he is on lead, his spade suit should be good for
4-5 tricks and he should be able to establish it,
and he should have side entries.
With kind regards

What action do we all normally take with 2HCPs and a misfit? It's an easy Pass for me too.

Very true. Have had players rebid 1N on 12-14 on similar auctions and wonder why I doubled 2 when it is clearly going to make.

Still I would wonder why partner didn't double 1N.

OK, thanks all. Sort of knew this was a no brainer, but needed sanity check for pass over 2S. The actual hand was silly:

pass

I admit I would have bid 2c vs 1h with this pretty much gross minimum with a tiny shot at game. P is probably near the minimum of a hand too strong to overcall 1s and with the total misfit it seems prudent to pass here before the opps start finding the x card. The fact that p did not try to x 1n for penalty reinforces the idea of getting out of bidding as quickly as possible and if p spades are not good enough let them lose the post mortem.

The choice here probably depends to some extent on our style of doubling one of a minor. In traditional methods 2 would be normal; for the modern style 1 is probably better.

Pass. Partner has doubled and bid a new suit which should indicate a "strong" overcall hand. You're void in partner's suit, so the hand is a misfit. Rule #1 for misfits is to get out of the auction as quickly and cheaply as possible. There's no guarantee that any further call by you will result in a better contract, so pass.

I rank
  • 3 = NAT. Hoping to improve the contract. Partner knows we would bid a 4 card suit at the 1-level, rather than a longer suit at the 2-level. According to some experts, when partner doubles with a strong hand, he should be flexible i.e. shape suitable for more than one denomination. OK :( I see that this would not have been a success, at the table, opposite partner's actual hand :(
  • Pass = NAT. Rather than blunder further into the mire. Advisable at imps, especially as 2 has not been doubled. At MPs, however, it is usually worth risking another bid to improve the contract.

I would have bid 2 originally would rather bid my 5 card nothing suit
problem would be what to bid if partner bids 2 after my 2
