AVE means "average", the average score on a board, so 50% at matchpoints or 0 IMPs at cross imps.

AVE is an assigned adjusted score and it is most frequently given in a BBO tournament when the time for the round expires and you do not finish the board.

You will see it on your score as A==, meaning both sides score average. There are variations, such as A++, where both sides are given AVE+ (average +), which is 60% or +3 IMPs; more commonly, there is A+-, where NS score average + (60%) and EW score average - (40%), probably because EW were considered at fault for slow play or an infraction.

When you score average, you can also ask the host or director for an adjustment. The likelihood of being successful is down to the quality of your director, the regulations of the event, and the strength of your case.
