If you have decided to lead trump on the opening lead, I am wondering if there are signals that you give to your partner with the particular trump card you led with? do you give a count? could/do you suggest a possible side suit lead...e.g. low spade(trump) might suggest wanting a C or D lead while a high spade might suggest you'd like a H or D lead? Would that be even legal in ACBL land? Finally, what would you lead with Q,x of trump vs. Q,J of trump vs Q,J,x of trump. Thanks in advance for any discussion on trump leads and associated signals they might impart.

Don’t overthink these things. Trump leads are usually made in one of three situations. They have sacrificed and will want to score ruffs, which your lead seeks to reduce in number or declarer has shown a two suiter and leader has length and strength in the other suit held by declarer or they’ve had an action such as 1S 1N 2D p p p. Now, even if opening leader isn’t loaded in spades, partner probably is and dummy is definitely short in spades so lead a trump

In most cases you won’t have the flexibility to give signals, and if your partner thinks you are signalling, he’ll often misread the situation. As for Qx in trump, that’s not a holding from which one will lead very often. I did see a. WC make that lead in a big match, but it didn’t work out well

We've found that it's not so unusual to lead trump from two or three small cards and normally give suit preference on lead in those situations.

With holdings that include an honour your leads are more often forced by not wanting to give up a trick (for example leading low from JTx in case partner has singleton queen). I can't think of any recent hand where I led trump from Qx or QJx; from QJ tight I try to randomise a bit if I'm leading the suit.

Yeah. Much more likely to lead xx or xxx, so suit preference vs count for you. We do that when following suit when declarer starts running trump

No. I do not give suit preference when leading trump. I prefer to see dummy before giving out information.

In addition, on many hands it’s not possible to know whether you are helping declarer more than partner before seeing dummy. Plus some holdings simply make it extremely difficult for partner to work out at trick one what you may be trying to say. Finally, what if we have useful holdings in two suits. I’m not good enough to know which suit I want to tell partner (and declarer) what information will be most useful.

Btw, if you give ANY systemic information with your trump spot, and declarer asks ‘leads and carding’ (as I literally do every hand unless I’ve already been informed) you had better tell the declarer what your agreement is. Secret carding agreements are…well…you fill in the blank. And please don’t claim that suit preference (or count) is standard on opening lead…it isn’t.
