The GIB robots show us how "good" they are at "defending". At trick 10, BOTH East and West choose to guard the SAME suit (spades) and BOTH choose to unguard the SAME suit (hearts), allowing declarer South to take three of the last four tricks when he is legitimately entitled to only two of them.

In fairness, though, the GIB robots OFTEN commit far worse "defensive" atrocities than this.

So, when the final contract ended up being 5C by South, and the GIB robot sitting West was on lead, he made the PERFECTLY NORMAL and WINNING lead of a SPADE to beat the contract, right?

No. Wrong. BECAUSE he's a (hopeless, clueless, incompetent) GIB robot, he stupidly and for no reason led a heart, allowing South to take eleven tricks and score up his game in 5C - a game that probably anyone except a GIB robot would have easily beaten!

Obviously this is a VERY easy question. He's a GIB robot (!) so of COURSE he leads what he LOVES to lead on auctions such as this. He leads a...spade (!)...because against no trump contracts he LOVES to lead the suit in which his OPPONENT has opened a weak two. I see him do it frequently.

Utterly hopeless, as usual. But let's be fair to the poor sap: Maybe ONE day it will FINALLY work out for him.

North is a GIB robot. GIB robot North decided to stay totally silent in the auction. GIB robot North decided not to bid 5D over the EW 4S. I wonder why GIB robot North opted to remain silent? Let's see:

I guess GIB robot North thought his AQJ987 of diamonds was not good enough support for the suit that I had overcalled vulnerable at the two level.

I guess GIB robot North thought his stiff club would be of no use to me in a diamond contract.

I guess GIB robot North was afraid that we'd have too many spade losers after the enemy auction had shown that they had at least 9 between them.

GIB robot North knew that I had at most 3 points in diamonds yet had overcalled...RED AGAINST WHITE...at the TWO LEVEL...but I guess GIB robot North thought I had no other high cards...OR...

I guess GIB robot North thought that ALL my values were in spades, the suit where I was MARKED for shortness. Or maybe...

I guess GIB robot North thought we would be KILLING 4S with all the DIAMOND TRICKS we would be taking on defence.

Or...I suppose it MIGHT be possible that GIB robot North is a TYPICAL GIB robot with absolutely no idea how to play bridge.

Typical HIGHLY questionable lead by the GIB robot sitting West. Let's just be charitable and say that the subsequent EW "defending" was less than perfect, but to their eternal credit, they DID win TWO of their FIVE TOP heart tricks. It almost seems unfair that NS scored 100% on the board and the
GIB robots who were "defending" scored...ZERO.

Trick three: The GIB robot sitting East obviously wants to GUARANTEE that I score all 13 tricks, so he politely plays his JACK of spades to make CERTAIN that I MUST take them all. Now THAT is a very considerate opponent! A typically HOPELESS and PATHETIC GIB "defender", but a very thoughtful, generous, and considerate OPPONENT who wants only the best for the people he plays against.

Given the choice between his partner's two suits, the GIB robot opts for the one where he has three card support rather than the one where he has four card support. Not particularly relevant to the result here, but I've noticed that they often give preference to their shorter suit, which admittedly fits into the...ahem..."unique" way GIB robots have of looking at MANY things.
